Domestic life
A community in Wotton under Edge, Gloucestershire, entered a competition to try and reduce their household energy consumption over 6 months. The focus of this project was that the reductions had to be made by behavioural change only, no home adaptations were included in the calculations.

Over this 6 months they managed to collectively reduce their household consumption by over 17% on the same period the previous year - obviously it does pay to turn off those standby lights and not use the tumbledryer when the washing could go outside!

Woman changing light bulb
Mr Worgan decided that he would do something about the lighting in his kitchen. At the time he had twelve 50 watt halogen lights. He worked out that being on for approximately 3 hours every day, they were costing him £91.98 per year. He replaced his halogen lights with 4.5 watt LED lights which also being on for 3 hours a day, now cost him only £8.28 per year.

Currently LED lights are more expensive than halogen lights and cost Mr Worgan £144. They will pay for themselves in just 19 months BUT they will last up to 30 years - a great many years longer than any halogen light.
